Why Did You Become An Entrepreneur?

Why did you become an entrepreneur? Have you ever sat down and asked yourself this and actually written down the answer?

Here’s my story.

I became an entrepreneur first because I needed somewhere to place some restless energy I had when I was trying to get over the fact we weren’t going to have more than one child. Sometimes your body tells you this before your brain and heart understand it. So you really need a place to focus the energy until the brain catches up and the heart heals.

I thought I had a unique skill and opportunity to help people organize their homes and lives. I became a professional organizer. I don’t believe you go into any kind of people business to just make money because there are probably so many easier ways to make money than working with humans who have needs and opinions of their own. I enjoyed my work and experiences with people.

At the same time I was invited write about organizing for a local newspaper’s mom blog with some very talented writers. Once I started writing I realized I how much I had missed it. I loved writing in high school and college, I had just let it go somewhere along the line.

I wrote for the blog for about a year when I realized I wanted to create my own organizing blog to help MORE people that I couldn’t get to locally. I did this while still working as a professional organizer.

Let’s just say my organizing blog blew up fast, in a good way! Suddenly, I was learning all about blogging, writing, social media marketing, e-mail marketing, creating webinars to sell, etc.etc. It was like going to college again but only taking all of the classes you LOVED! I was thoroughly absorbed and fascinated!

Mindset, message, self sabotage, sales, selling, business, business tips, entrepreneur, startup, solopreneur, mompreneur, biz, girlboss, ladyboss, productivity, blogging, blog course, info product, freelance, marketing, facebook, social media, email marketing, content marketing, business tools

My new entrepreneur goal was to monetize my blog and write full time while subcontracting out professional organizing work. This is what I did for another year. I worked for almost five years as an organizer. After about a year of sub contracting work out I realized I wanted to let that part of the business go and focus on the blog and creating courses to help people learn all that I had learned.

Things were going great! But at some point I realized I wasn’t actually writing what I wanted to be writing about anymore. I was burnt out of the How To type of posts. I wanted to write about why we do things instead of how to do them.

So I evolved again from my organizing blog to just blogging under my name. At the same time I was getting many inquiries on doing virtual assistant (VA) work for people and entrepreneur coaching. I fully believe when God hands you a gift you receive it! I began to take these jobs and realized while I love do some VA work on the side, coaching entrepreneurs and helping them grow their business was it for me! I LOVE IT!

In the past year I became really attracted to studying about mindset growth and manifesting everything you want. You can already tell from what I’ve said when I find a topic that interests me I dive right in! I love being a lifelong student. Now, I have integrated the entrepreneur coaching with the mindset coaching and found my CALLING!

The point of me sharing my story with you is to let you know that most of the time the entrepreneur’s journey isn’t a straight line but more like a curvy windy path with roadblocks and dead ends along the way. But it’s also filled with amazing experiences, education, and joy!

I would LOVE if you shared your entrepreneur journey with me!

Don’t forget,

Do You Believe in Yourself Really?

Mindset, message, self sabotage, sales, selling, business, business tips, entrepreneur, startup, solopreneur, mompreneur, biz, girlboss, ladyboss, productivity, blogging, blog course, info product, freelance, marketing, facebook, social media, email marketing, content marketing, business tools

I’m finding it a bit confusing when you say you believe in yourself, your business, your purpose, your calling, but you are not fully showing up to live it.

If you REALLY believed in your purpose or calling and creating your dream business then why are you only sticking your toe into the water instead of actually jumping into the deep end?

Mindset, message, self sabotage, sales, selling, business, business tips, entrepreneur, startup, solopreneur, mompreneur, biz, girlboss, ladyboss, productivity, blogging, blog course, info product, freelance, marketing, facebook, social media, email marketing, content marketing, business tools

No, I’m not picking on you, as I recently had to ask myself these very same hard questions.

Many of you may have a comfortable life already. Your spouse is the breadwinner so technically you can afford to just dip your toe in to test the waters before jumping all in. But how will you know if you can swim if you never get in the water?

This just leads me to think that maybe you really aren’t called to be a kick ass entrepreneur, creator, write, blogger, messenger. Maybe it’s just an idea you are “thinking about” or toying around with until something better and more entertaining comes along.

Because let me tell you if you really were called to be a creative entrepreneur then you literally wake up in the morning and can’t wait until you get the kids off to school and hubby off to work, so you can DIVE into the deep end of the water and test and create and lead!

You believe in yourself so much that you know a successful business is already DONE in your future! You are not afraid to try new things, learn new technology, and invest money and time where necessary. You are not afraid of failure or evolving because it’s all part of the game.

Mindset, message, self sabotage, sales, selling, business, business tips, entrepreneur, startup, solopreneur, mompreneur, biz, girlboss, ladyboss, productivity, blogging, blog course, info product, freelance, marketing, facebook, social media, email marketing, content marketing, business tools

If you were already a successful entrepreneur, making the money you want, helping the people you want, and living your dream what would you be doing right now differently? How would your life be different?

This is what I’ve had to learn and ask myself over and over because if you know it’s already done and BELIEVE in yourself REALLY then you should start living that way now!

Want More Clients? Write About the Why Not The How

Want More Clients? Write About the Why Not The How | AUTUMNLEOPOLD.COM | Business tips, business, branding, entrepreneurs, startup, solopreneur, mompreneur, biz, girlboss, ladyboss, ecourse, blog course, info product, freelance, marketing, instagram, pinterest, facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, social media, email marketing, content marketing, blogging, b2b, productivity, business tools

I’ve had two wonderful conversations this week that both ended up having the same message. If you want to attract more clients to your business use your blog and write about the WHY not the HOW.

How many articles do you read out there that tell you how to do something? There are tons and tons of them. From, “How to Organize Your Pantry” to “How to lose 10 pounds in 10 days.” While these make good headlines and they may get a lot of traffic to your site do they convert into clients well? I’m not so sure.

It seems like people mostly read these articles so they can get tips on how to do things on their own. But how many times do they actually reach out to the writer to ask for help.

Want More Clients? Write About the Why Not The How | AUTUMNLEOPOLD.COM | Business tips, business, branding, entrepreneurs, startup, solopreneur, mompreneur, biz, girlboss, ladyboss, ecourse, blog course, info product, freelance, marketing, instagram, pinterest, facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, social media, email marketing, content marketing, blogging, b2b, productivity, business tools

Writing Challenge

If you are a blogging entrepreneur I want you to try something new.

Do a month long experiment where you don’t write about the how but you actually write about the why. Write about, “Why You Should Organize Your Pantry” or “Why You Should Lose 10 Pounds.” Don’t tell them any steps or how to do it.

You can use case studies of past clients and write about results. You can tell them how they will feel, how they may save money, how it can lower blood pressure, promote independence, whatever outcomes you can think of.

What you are doing is giving outcomes not steps. Tell them the why, teach them the how.

Want More Clients? Write About the Why Not The How | AUTUMNLEOPOLD.COM | Business tips, business, branding, entrepreneurs, startup, solopreneur, mompreneur, biz, girlboss, ladyboss, ecourse, blog course, info product, freelance, marketing, instagram, pinterest, facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, social media, email marketing, content marketing, blogging, b2b, productivity, business tools

Ask them to reach out to you if they would like help with the steps. Ask them to email you or private message you. Just implore them to reach out.

Tell them they can stay and live in the exact same space they are in or they can reach out for help and see the outcomes mentioned above.

Now, I can’t guarantee your blog will have as much blog traffic, but I can guarantee that you will resonate with your audience. You will attract a new audience and you will start gaining paying clients.

Sometimes it’s a choice you have to make between being popular (lots of site traffic) or being profitable (lots of actual clients).

Selling Your Message

You can’t expect to make money if you are not actively selling everyday. The above way of writing a blog is a form of selling. It’s called content marketing. It’s getting your message out daily.

People are fickle. They may bookmark or pin your “How To” posts but does it really grab them and make them want to reach out to you for help?

This is what I challenge you to work on in the next 30 days! I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Why Opt-Ins Aren’t Working Anymore and What To Do Now?

Why Opt-Ins Aren't Working Anymore and What To Do Now? | AUTUMNLEOPOLD.COM| Business tips, business, branding, entrepreneurs, startup, solopreneur, mompreneur, biz, girlboss, ladyboss, ecourse, blog course, info product, freelance, marketing, instagram, pinterest, facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, social media, email marketing, content marketing, blogging, b2b, productivity, business tools

Have you noticed lately on your blog or website that it’s a really slow painful process to get people to go for one of your opt-ins? Or that once people opt-in, grab your freebie, they unsubscribe. It’s like we are playing a cat and mouse game.

What’s the Problem?

Why Opt-Ins Aren't Working Anymore and What To Do Now? | AUTUMNLEOPOLD.COM| Business tips, business, branding, entrepreneurs, startup, solopreneur, mompreneur, biz, girlboss, ladyboss, ecourse, blog course, info product, freelance, marketing, instagram, pinterest, facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, social media, email marketing, content marketing, blogging, b2b, productivity, business tools

People aren’t stopping to take the time to read anymore. They want your free content sure, but opting into your blog to read what you’ve written and enjoy being a part of your list just doesn’t hold the same sway for people anymore.

This may be because we all have very full in-boxes and multiple email addresses. Also, because we are being sold to everywhere! Content and e mail marketing are huge! Many times the content and offers are valuable, but other times the sales feel petty and like the blogger isn’t in it for you but only for themselves. I don’t think that’s necessarily true, it just seems that way because many solopreneur bloggers simply don’t know how or have the time to “nurture” their lists and provide all of the free content upgrades before they begin selling like the big bloggers do.

I also think people seem to forget that bloggers HAVE to make money somehow. There are overhead costs, costs for their time, and bloggers would like to be paid for their valuable content. Bloggers are providing a service whether it’s valuable information, entertainment or a place to find answers.

The Freebie Game

Why Opt-Ins Aren't Working Anymore and What To Do Now? | AUTUMNLEOPOLD.COM| Business tips, business, branding, entrepreneurs, startup, solopreneur, mompreneur, biz, girlboss, ladyboss, ecourse, blog course, info product, freelance, marketing, instagram, pinterest, facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, social media, email marketing, content marketing, blogging, b2b, productivity, business tools

The FREE content and giveaway game has really taken over blogging; so much so, that you almost spend more time creating free content and giveaways to even interest people in your blog and less time really focusing on your craft or writing for your audience. That’s why big bloggers and companies with teams killing it right now.

If you are an individual blogger, entrepreneur, solopreneuer, mompreneur then you may be getting your blogging butt kicked by the big bloggers with the VA’s, the graphic designers, the CFO’s and the personal assistants. Now I’m not saying these people are bad by any means. Many of us aspire to have it all one day too. BUT, how to compete right now for your place in this noisy social media, to many emails, stop selling to me of I’ll unsubscribe you blog world?

Suggestions

Some I mention in my livestream Opt-In video:

Here are a few more ideas as well:

  • Stop competing. Take all of the time and energy you put into creating FREE opt-ins and channel it into your writing. Write EPIC content, post it on social media always linking back to your blog. Do this on REPEAT.
  • Start live-streaming and talking about how you really feel about whatever is going on in your niche. The more real you are the more you pique peoples interest. Always put a call to action to check out your blog, Facebook group, or current sales offer at the end of the videos (or somewhere in the video as well). Show these video’s live on your FB page and then email them to your existing tribe and embed them in a blog post.
  • Create an opt-in for your videos and your content.
  • Subscribe to only 5-10 of your favorite writers, bloggers, entrepreneurs who you know deliver great content time and time again. Do what they say. Don’t flood your own inbox and distract yourself from the writing and creating you should be doing.
  • Support other bloggers on the same level as yourself. Create your own tribe of bloggers, writers, and creators whom you subscribe to and support, by sharing posts, chatting in groups, or just offering words of support.
  • Remember the big bloggers had to start somewhere too!
  • DO NOT get discouraged! DO NOT GIVE UP YOUR DREAMS!

Why You Should STOP Focusing on Social Media to Promote Your Blog

Why You Should STOP Focusing on Social Media to Promote Your Blog |AUTUMNLEOPOLD.COM | Business tips, business, branding, entrepreneurs, startup, solopreneur, mompreneur, biz, girlboss, ladyboss, ecourse, blog course, info product, freelance, marketing, instagram, pinterest, facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, social media, email marketing, content marketing, blogging, b2b, productivity, business tools

So many bloggers out there are other things besides bloggers. We are wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, business owners, employees, and even full time RVers. We are BUSY! We are scrambling to find time for everything blog related, particularly social media.

One thing we all have in common is we have a finite amount of time to write our blog content and share our messages. Some of us do this daily, some weekly, some multiple times per week based on what our schedule allows.

I’ve noticed a few things in the past year about people who blog that I would like to share as food for thought. Maybe you’ll find yourself in one of these categories and that’s okay!

  • Many small business owners, think they should be blogging to promote their business, but don’t know what to say, why they are saying it, how to promote their blog or their business, and how a blog even helps.
  • Many small business owners with blogs spend WAY too much time promoting their blog on social media driving up their blog traffic numbers…but for what purpose? Are you looking for clients? Is your blog monetized?
  • Many bloggers spend WAY too much time promoting their blog on social media driving up their blog traffic numbers…but for what purpose? Are you looking for clients? Is your blog monetized?
  • Many bloggers spend WAY too much time on social media looking for content to share on their social media platforms. Why?

Here’s the thing, I’m so not faulting you because I have done ALL OF THE ABOVE.  I’m encouraging you to ask and answer a few questions.

Why You Should STOP Focusing on Social Media to Promote Your Blog |AUTUMNLEOPOLD.COM | Business tips, business, branding, entrepreneurs, startup, solopreneur, mompreneur, biz, girlboss, ladyboss, ecourse, blog course, info product, freelance, marketing, instagram, pinterest, facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, social media, email marketing, content marketing, blogging, b2b, productivity, business tools

Social Media Questions

What benefits are you getting from your social media activity?

Clients-how many per week/month?

Blog traffic-how is that traffic helping you?

Are you getting clients from it, sales, or if your blog is monetized, money?

How much time are you spending on each platform?

Is the amount of time you are promoting on social media worth the results you are getting?

What is something right now that you think you don’t have time for?

Could you do that instead of spending the time on social media?

What are the minimum things you should be doing on social media? (If you don’t know I’ll be blogging on this soon).

Here’s the Thing

I said you should stop focusing on social media but I didn’t say you should quit it all together. There are certain things you should do to promote your blog, your message and/or your sales activity.

However, those things can be done by you manually, by a team member, or a VA. The rest of your social activity NEEDS TO BE SCHEDULED.

Social media is nowhere near as important as:

Writing and creating quality content

Sharing your message/purpose with your audience daily

Sharing or offers and services with your audience daily

Growing your email list

Interacting with your tribe in your groups

Creating new products to sell

Remember it’s not about not having enough time, it’s about prioritizing to make time for the things that matter.

Doing What You’re Called to Do in 2017

Doing What You’re Called to Do in 2017 | AUTUMNLEOPOLD.COM | Mindset, message, self sabotage, self improvement, business, business tips, entrepreneurs, startup, solopreneur, mompreneur, biz, girlboss, ladyboss, productivity, momlife, moms, writing, writing entrepreneurs, blogging organizers, blogging, blogger

Some of you, my loyal followers and readers might be asking the question lately about why am I talking so much about mindset? What happened to all of the organizing posts and what is this writing entrepreneur gig?

So I thought I would take some time to clarify the new message and mission of this blog for 2017 and beyond.

On Organizing

Let’s start with what happened to Smart Happy Organized and the organizing posts I was doing. I love home organizing and professional organizing and I loved writing about them. I just found that after three years my voice was changing, the people I wanted to impact and serve was changing, and I didn’t feel like I had much more to say about organizing.

In fact I was taking more of a minimalist stance and what I really wanted to start saying was get rid of your stuff and quit buying more! But of course that’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

So I decided to evolve and see where that takes me.

Doing What You’re Called to Do in 2017 | AUTUMNLEOPOLD.COM | Mindset, message, self sabotage, self improvement, business, business tips, entrepreneurs, startup, solopreneur, mompreneur, biz, girlboss, ladyboss, productivity, momlife, moms, writing, writing entrepreneurs, blogging organizers, blogging, blogger

On Writing Entrepreneurs

Within the professional organizing world I met some amazing people who are not only professional organizers but writers and authors as well. I found myself talking more to them about the many different aspects of writing, blogging, publishing etc.

I became really excited about writing more myself and seeing where that could take me. Not just writing organizing posts but writing posts about changing your life, your mindset, your income, and of course the technical stuff for bloggers and entrepreneurs. I found I really want to impact and help those of us who write and want to earn an income using our writing in one way or another.

True story here, my mother was a writer. I used to make fun of her for saying she was a writer. Mostly because she had one very successful period in her life of being a writer and getting published. Then for years she only wrote in spurts, never tried to get paid, and never made any more money. Yet no matter what, she said she was a writer when people asked her what she did. In her heart she would always be a writer. My mother passed away in 2014 and I often wonder what she would think if she knew her daughter had become a writer too. I also wonder what her life may have been like if she had found inspiration and information in some form and from someone. So if I can be the inspiration, the coach, the mentor or whatever you want to call if for a writer out there who is struggling I believe that’s my purpose and my message. I can see it now.

You will hear and see me sharing my message daily or more if you follow me. That’s the scoop on the writing entrepreneur gig.

Doing What You’re Called to Do in 2017 | AUTUMNLEOPOLD.COM | Mindset, message, self sabotage, self improvement, business, business tips, entrepreneurs, startup, solopreneur, mompreneur, biz, girlboss, ladyboss, productivity, momlife, moms, writing, writing entrepreneurs, blogging organizers, blogging, blogger

On Mindset

Lastly, you may be wondering where all of this mindset stuff is coming from and why am I grabbing on to it so tightly. At the end of 2016, a livestream video caught my eye by an author, speaker, and badass success coach named Kat Loterzo. After I watched the livestream I felt excited, energized, and a renewed sense of…something! I didn’t know what at that point but I wanted to explore it! So I watched more of her videos, began listening to her audio messages while I was walking the dog etc. I began journaling, doing mindset work, daily affirmations, and manifesting! I can’t really describe the change that was taking place in me but I was excited about something. About writing, getting back in shape, about calling whatever good I wanted into my life. Once I started on this course and saw that this manifestation was really working I knew I had to begin to share it with my tribe as well. Since this isn’t what I am known for I thought I would just start writing about it, introduce it and talk about how it’s really changed my path in my personal life, fitness, family, business, and writing. I should give credit and say how Kat  has really changed my path!

So I will be bringing you some of the things I learn and hopefully excite you and get you started on this kick ass journey too! If it’s not for you I totally get it. I’ll be talking about plenty of other topics that have to do with writing, blogging, small biz & entrepreneurship. Sometimes I may even throw in a mom story because I am a mom of an eight year old and crazy funny things happen all of the time.

But for now here is my message to you:

“I am a writing entrepreneur who wants to inspire, coach, mentor and serve you! I want you to become the kick ass writing entrepreneur you were born to be! I want to help you show up daily to work on your writing, your life and your business!”

Blogging Mistakes: My Top 3 + One Amazing Resource

Blogging Mistakes: My Top 3 + One Amazing Resource | AUTUMNLEOPOLD.COM | Business tips, business, branding, entrepreneurs, startup, solopreneur, mompreneur, biz, girlboss, ladyboss, ecourse, blog course, info product, freelance, marketing, instagram, pinterest, facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, social media, email marketing, content marketing, blogging, b2b, productivity, business tools

When you start out as a blogger you are usually inspired by someone else’s blog. You see how amazing and inspiring they are and you want to do that too. You have the goal of helping people in your niche and you hope to eventually monetize your blog. Does that sound about right? Yes, that was me too and I wish I could say it worked out that smoothly! But of course there were (and still are) some bumps along the road. So I wanted to take a second before 2017 gets rolling and reflect on my biggest blogging mistakes in the past two years.

Blogging Mistakes

Mistake #1

Not monetizing right away. I played by some imaginary rules and figured I needed a respectable sized email list and excellent traffic to my blog before I monetize. I should have just used the mantra, “Good is better than perfect.”

I was already a respected leader in my industry due to my social media presence and my willingness to help others in my niche for free for a very long time. I should have used that an at least started affiliate marketing earlier. I literally made nothing on my blog the first year. I made just enough to cover my costs.

earn-more-mone-icon

What would I do differently?

  1. Look for products I liked, used and enjoyed, and become an affiliate.
  2. Learn all I could from courses and books about affiliate marketing.

Mistake #2

Not having good time management. Having a new blog is like having a newborn. It really takes so much time learning everything you need JUST to get up to par. Between the time investment and the monetary investment you can end up drained, business broke, struggling with weight gain, and your family mad at you. That may or may not have happened to me! 😉

vector-smart-object-5

What would I do differently?

  1. When you are in the planning phases of your blog sit down and learn some time management techniques.
  2. Learn how to put yourself and self care first. Starting a blog will take many hours of sedentary work that you should account for lest you want to gain weight!
  3. Learn how to prioritize and be productive, not just busy.
  4. Set boundaries with your family and yourself. Work time is work time and family time is family time.

Mistake #3

I had no idea what professional blogging meant. A professional blogger is a blogger who is getting paid for their work. I had been blogging for an area newspaper where I had an editor and did very little marketing of my own. For some reason when bloggers start out they think if they write it then people will read it. If you are a year or two into the blogging journey then you know marketing your blog takes up 80% of your time. I wish I had learned more in the beginning about email marketing, online marketing, building a good foundation, brand awareness. SO. MANY. THINGS. I didn’t know about and had to learn the LONG. HARD. WAY, not to mention spending thousands of dollars.

vector-smart-object-1

What would I do differently?

  1. Pick a few really good blogging coaches and course to invest in.
