How to Get Comfortable With Selling

How many of you are extra super comfortable about selling your products and/or services?

How many of you don’t have a problem sounding “salesy” and actually asking for the sale?

Okay, if you are comfortable and have no problems with the above you can just skip to the PS.

But for the rest of us it’s okay to admit that we struggle with being comfortable selling. Whether we are talking to our clients in person, writing a sales message, page, or blog, or asking for the sale on the phone we have that little bit of insecurity that creeps up on us.

This bit of insecurity is what makes us bumble our words and our message, negotiate and lower our fees, and give the potential client time to get away instead of asking for the sale. The insecurity about selling comes from 5 main areas.

5 Areas of Insecurity Around Selling

  1. Not know your product/service well enough (or not knowing how to talk about your product/service).
  2. Fear of doing it wrong (especially if you are trying to follow a formula).
  3. Fear of rejection.
  4. Not valuing yourself, product or service enough
  5. Trying to sell from a scarcity mindset.

Today, I want to talk about how you can get around number one. Here’s the thing, you have to know your product or services inside and out before you can really sell it.

If the above is true then it’s not that you don’t know your product, it’s that you have a hard time communicating the benefits of your product.

Bear with me as I go on a tangent here to tell you a story about my dog, JoJo.

Jo Jo is an amazing dog! She is fun, loyal, loving, and energetic!

She has helped me in so many ways!

Before we got JoJo, I was lonely, sad, and not exercising.

Once we brought JoJo into our lives I was more happy, walking daily, and now had a companion!

I know you might not be looking for a dog but once you meet Jo Jo you will not be able to resist getting one like her! She is wonderful! I’m so excited and I love talking about her! Maybe we can chat on the phone sometime and I can tell you more about how to get a dog like JoJo.

Okay, So you may have caught on in the middle that I’m not actually telling you a story but I’m trying to sell you a dog like Jo Jo!

This was not scripted it was off the top of my head because it was easy to just talk to you about my awesome dog!

Now try this exercise by replacing JoJo, and a few of the other words with your product or service:

____________ is an amazing ___________! ___________ is __________,__________and __________!

__________ has helped me in so many ways!

Before we got __________, I was __________,__________and __________.

Once we brought __________into our lives I was more happy, __________, and now had a __________!

I know you might not be looking for a __________ but once you __________ you will not be able to resist getting one! __________ is wonderful! I’m so excited and I love talking about __________! Maybe we can chat on the phone sometime and I can tell you more about how to get __________!

(BTW-one of my good friends said after doing this exercise she realized she needed to sell wine!)

Think about it like you just got an Apple Watch and you are telling your best friend how awesome it is and telling her about all of your favorite features, how it’s going to help you, and why you highly recommend her getting one. Tell her you are not sure how you ever survived, stayed on time and organized without one!

Once you write this out you will see you just wrote a sales page. This is how you get comfortable with selling.

If you have followed a step by step, bullet point by bullet point message about how to sell or write a sales page you can take some of the ideas but selling works so much better when you are natural and just sharing something you are passionate about with someone.
