Summer, sun and margaritas equals grilling, grass stains and fresh air. Once the weather gets nice we pretty much live outside. I’m of the belief that your outdoor space should reflect your personality just like the interior of your home. The patio should be a comfortable family/dining/lounging area, encouraging those kids, obsessed with electronics (mine included) to get their hineys out there and soak up some vitamin d.
We have a long narrow patio area so I broke it up into different spaces to serve multiple purposes. Right outside the patio door we have a nice large sectional sofa from IKEA that we love. We can all fit together on it, it’s comfy and the pieces all come apart for easy storage. Doesn’t hurt it was the most reasonably priced I could find either. I am rethinking the white cushions though, with four kids ages 2-11 and four dogs that like laying on the furniture, white isn’t the smartest choice. I couldn’t help myself though because I loved how crisp and clean it looked, in the store. Ugh, that lasted about a hot second before the first dog jumped on it (before a human even sat down) and there were nice muddy prints left behind. The covers are supposed to be washable, haven’t even gone there yet though.
The rug and some outdoor pillows from World Market are on the couch, these are all four years old and still look good. I have noticed that not all outdoor cushions/covers are created equal. I have tried some from other stores that faded out before one summer. World Market also has a very nice selection of colorful outdoor stuff to choose from and they have regular sales.
Tip: if you are a world market member (free to sign up) you earn towards free stuff, get special promo discounts and save even more money!
The fire table is a Restoration Hardware Outlet find, which I love, the center removes for a fire fluid to burn. Be careful with that stuff! My hubby lit himself on fire with a giant fireball when he attempted to pour more fuel into a pan that had just burned out (HOT). I should mention here that I advised against it and he says “it will be fine!” After said fireball and stop, drop and roll (yes folks it really works!) occurred he read the bottle which clearly stated “do not add more fuel to pan after burning out”. Thank goodness he only burned off all of his leg hair and had a minor burn on his knee. Thank you elementary school for fire safety lessons!
Behind the couch area I have a table for dining, also from World Market. Some outdoor chairs and a bench to accommodate this large crew. Cushions and pillows are also World Market, can you tell I like World Market?! Next to the dining area are a couple of rocking chairs that are lovely to sit in and drink coffee in the morning or sip some wine in the evening and watch the kids play in the yard. Isn’t there just something about rocking? So relaxing. Those are from Pier 1, are five years old and I adore them! Starting to show some wear and tear but I can’t bear to part with them, I plan on having them another 20 years…at least!
And finally on the end we have our, “Ahh I’m gonna get a tan, oops I fell asleep and woke up burned,” lounging area. We try not to do that too often, but it sure is comfy. Loungers and two extension tables in the middle are IKEA, they are the same line as the sectional. The three pots in front of them are from Home Goods and they have small rose bushes in them. I have plants/roses everywhere, can never have enough flowers! Behind the loungers I have an old wrought iron three tiered planter. I have planted flowers in there, however, they need to be watered constantly as it’s so dry here. Can you tell I’m making an excuse for accidentally killing everything I have tried in there? So I decided to take pity on the poor flowers and leave it empty, although I have been thinking it could use some pizzaz and debating on painting it a color. Any suggestions?!
I think that about covers it! With this decor you can also fade right into fall without missing a beat. Maybe just add a few throw blankets and plant some mums. That’s our back patio/home extension, what do you all put outside? Happy Grilling and Margaritas!!
